The Criminal Musical

PERP! The Criminal Musical is the brainchild of New York Post writer, editor and crime reporter Laura Italiano, who, in true Tabloid fashion, has been living a secret double life as a thespian. Here you'll find music demos, a development history, and updates on where the thing's going. You can reach Laura at 917-930-6072 or litaliano@me.com

 songwriters in mufti

In April through July of 2020, The York Theatre Company sponsored a series of seven five-day songwriting challenges, each with a different theme. Whew! Not easy! The fabulous Sarah Statler is featured on piano and vocals for each of my songs. All lyrics/music are by Laura Italiano; all arrangements by Adam Wiggins, excepting the first song, “Be My Mufti,” arranged by Dewey Fleszar.

“Songwriters in Mufti” borrows its name from The York’s more well-known “Musicals in Mufti” series, which dusts off underappreciated musical gems for semi-staged revivals. “In Mufti” means “in civilian clothes,” as opposed to in military attire or other uniform. Since this songwriting challenge took place in the midst of our 2020 pandemic, “In Mufti” generally, for me, meant “In pajamas.”

If you are pressed for time, scroll down to the last song, “Scat, Human!” I like this one.
